Ex-AA Attendant Filmed Girls in Plane Bathrooms

A former American Airlines flight attendant, Estes Carter Thompson III, 37, from Charlotte, N.C., was apprehended on Thursday following accusations of secretly recording multiple underage girls in airplane bathrooms during 2023, according to federal prosecutors.

Thompson’s arrest took place in Lynchburg, Va., and he is slated to be transferred to Boston for a future appearance in federal court.

The charges against Thompson include attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography. The U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Massachusetts revealed that investigators discovered evidence indicating Thompson recorded video footage of at least five different girls while they were using the lavatory on American Airlines flights.

Expressing concern over the disturbing allegations, Joshua S. Levy, the acting U.S. attorney for the district of Massachusetts, stated, “The deeply disturbing conduct alleged here is something no parent or child should ever have to worry about when they travel.” Levy emphasized the importance of ensuring that everyone, especially children, feels safe and secure as airline passengers. Parents, he added, should be able to travel with their children with confidence.

According to legal documents, Estes Carter Thompson III was working as a flight attendant on an American Airlines flight from Charlotte, N.C., to Boston on September 2 when he allegedly attempted to record a video of a 14-year-old girl using the lavatory.

During the flight, the teenager went to use the main cabin bathroom near her parents. Finding it occupied, Thompson approached her and guided her to the first-class lavatory at the front of the aircraft, as detailed in the documents.

However, before the girl could enter the bathroom, Thompson informed her that he needed to wash his hands and address the lavatory’s broken toilet seat. Allegedly, the charging document reveals that upon entering the bathroom, the teenager noticed red stickers under the open toilet seat lid with handwritten notes stating, “INOPERATIVE CATERING EQUIPMENT,” “REMOVE FROM SERVICE,” and “SEAT BROKEN.” Beneath these stickers, she reportedly found a concealed iPhone recording a video.

According to the complaint, after taking a photo of the display and leaving the bathroom, Thompson immediately re-entered it. The charging document outlines these details as part of the evidence against Thompson in the case.
