Google Settles for $5 Billion in Incognito Mode Tracking Scandal

In a significant development, Google is set to settle a $5 billion privacy lawsuit linked to the Incognito Mode tracking scandal. The lawsuit alleged that Google spied on individuals utilizing the “incognito” mode in its Chrome browser, as well as similar “private” modes in other browsers, to monitor their internet activities. Google has now agreed to resolve this privacy dispute.

The class-action lawsuit, initiated in 2020, accused Google of misleading users by assuring them that it would not track their internet activities while using incognito mode. Despite these assurances, the lawsuit argued that Google’s advertising technologies and other methods continued to document details of users’ site visits and activities during supposedly “private” browsing.

Plaintiffs went on to charge that Google’s actions resulted in an “unaccountable trove of information” about users who believed they had taken steps to safeguard their privacy.

This settlement, finalized on Thursday, awaits approval from a federal judge. Although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, the original lawsuit sought $5 billion on behalf of users. Lawyers for the plaintiffs anticipate presenting a final settlement agreement to the court by Feb. 24.

Notably, Google has yet to respond to a request for comment on the settlement, leaving questions about the company’s stance on the matter unanswered. The agreement comes as a resolution to the controversy surrounding Google’s alleged tracking practices during users’ supposed private browsing sessions.
