Las Vegas Raiders have a new general manager Tom Telesco

The Las Vegas Raiders have made a significant move in their leadership, appointing Tom Telesco, the former general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers, as their new GM. The announcement was made on Tuesday, less than six weeks after the Raiders secured a dominating 63-21 victory against the Chargers at Allegiant Stadium on Dec. 14. This decisive win resulted in the departure of both Telesco and coach Brandon Staley the following day.

Telesco, 51, had a notable tenure as the Chargers’ general manager since 2013, crafting rosters that included key players like Keenan Allen, Melvin Gordon III, Joey Bosa, Derwin James Jr., Justin Herbert, Kenneth Murray Jr., and Tuli Tuipulotu. Despite the talent, the Chargers underachieved in the AFC West.

During the past three seasons, Telesco, alongside Coach Staley, displayed aggression in free agency and the trade market. Notable moves included trading for edge rusher Khalil Mack, signing cornerback J.C. Jackson to a substantial contract, and adding defensive tackles Sebastian Joseph-Day and Morgan Fox.

However, some of these bold moves resulted in setbacks, with the signing of J.C. Jackson standing out as a significant misstep. Jackson’s short-lived tenure and substantial earnings prompted Telesco to publicly acknowledge the mistake, offering an apology to the team’s defensive backs. This signing marked the conclusion of Telesco’s major decisions with the Chargers.

Telesco’s time with the Chargers saw a record of 84-92, including 2-3 in playoff appearances, under three different head coaches. Now, with the Raiders, Telesco joins Coach Antonio Pierce, who was recently appointed as the full-time head coach. Telesco takes over from interim GM Champ Kelly.

The Raiders, finishing 8-9 last season, face immediate challenges, particularly in the quarterback position. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, benched by Coach Pierce, is a potential cut or trade candidate. While rookie Aidan O’Connell showed promise in the season’s final games, there are considerations about the team’s long-term starting quarterback.

As the new GM, Telesco must address crucial decisions, including selecting the offensive coordinator and determining the future of players like Josh Jacobs, the 2022 All-Pro running back. Jacobs, who had a challenging season, will be under scrutiny for his performance and contract status.

Telesco’s extensive experience, coupled with his background as a former college receiver and previous roles with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and Indianapolis Colts, positions him to navigate the Raiders through these critical decisions and challenges in the upcoming season.
