Meryl Streep and Don Gummer Secretly Separated for 6 Years: What Went Wrong?

Meryl Streep and Don Gummer, who were married for 45 years, have decided to part ways.

A representative for Streep, who is 74 years old, shared the news, stating that Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for over six years. They still hold care and respect for each other but have chosen to lead separate lives. This announcement was made on October 21, as reported by Us Weekly.

Their last public appearance as a couple was at the 2018 Academy Awards. Gummer, a sculptor at 76, walked the red carpet with Streep, who was nominated for her 21st Oscar. (However, she didn’t win the Best Actress category that year.)

The story of Meryl Streep and Don Gummer goes back to 1978 when they first met through an introduction by Meryl’s brother. Just six months later, they tied the knot. Over the years, they welcomed four children together: Henry, 43, Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32.

Although they mostly kept their relationship out of the public eye, Streep once shared her thoughts on what made their marriage work. She mentioned the importance of goodwill, flexibility, and knowing when to keep quiet. In her words to Vogue in 2002, “There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can’t imagine eschewing one for the other.”

Throughout their marriage, Gummer was a steadfast supporter and often accompanied Streep on the red carpet, even after she won her Oscar for “The Iron Lady” in 2012. In her victory speech, Streep thanked him and acknowledged his vital role in her life.

Meryl Streep and Don Gummer shared the responsibility of raising their children. While Streep played the “bad cop,” Gummer was the “good cop.” In Streep’s words to the Sydney Morning Herald in June 2019, “Teamwork is everything. My husband Don was very involved. He was a little more relaxed when it comes to raising kids. I was more of a tiger mom.”

Streep shared a personal story about her son’s piano lessons, where she was the advocate for continued lessons, while her husband felt it might be her dream imposed on their child. Eventually, their son became a musician, proving Streep’s point.

Streep also admitted to being overprotective of her kids, recognizing the need for them to learn independence and stand on their own.

In addition to their children, Meryl Streep and Don Gummer are proud grandparents to four, as Henry and his wife Tamryn Storm Hawker have two children, Mamie and her husband Mehar Sethi have a son, and Grace and husband Mark Ronson welcomed their first baby in March.
