Morocco earthquake: Death toll rises to 296

  • Earthquake strikes Morocco, killing at least 296 people and injuring hundreds more.
  • The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and struck the Atlas Mountains region, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of the city of Agadir.
  • Rescuers are still searching for survivors, but many buildings were destroyed in the earthquake, making it difficult to reach those who may be trapped.
  • The earthquake also caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power lines.

The earthquake that struck Morocco late Friday, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, resulted in a tragic loss of at least 296 lives, according to the national news agency, citing the Interior Ministry. Marrakesh was one of the most affected cities, and the quake prompted panic and evacuations in several other cities, including Casablanca, Rabat, and Fez. The earthquake’s impact has been devastating for the region, and recovery efforts are likely underway to address the aftermath and support affected communities.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted in a preliminary report that the recent 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Morocco occurred in an area where such events are uncommon but not unexpected. According to their data, since 1900, there have been no magnitude 6 or larger earthquakes within 310 miles (500 kilometers) of this region, with only nine earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher recorded. This earthquake appears to have taken residents by surprise, and the USGS pointed out that many structures in the region are vulnerable to seismic activity.

Unconfirmed social media footage has shown significant damage to buildings and people fleeing to the streets out of fear of further tremors. Additionally, a 4.9-magnitude aftershock occurred 19 minutes after the initial quake, adding to the concerns and challenges for the affected communities.
